Leave Your Net
They were casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen.
“Follow Me,” He told them,
“and I will make you fish for people!”
Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
Matthew 4:18-20 (HCSB)
The very first words Jesus spoke to the disciples, Peter and Andrew, were “Follow Me”. These are the men He chose to carry the message of His salvation. They were His first disciples and they left their nets to follow and learn. I am a disciple, too.
They were fishermen.
I am a wife,
I throw my net into my own sea. I throw it out there hoping something good to be caught. What on earth is vaster than the sea? The water is dark, deep and troublesome.
Many times my net has been self reliance, pride and control and when I use it, I catch worry and fear.
Nets are heavy.
Jesus tells me to follow Him and leave those nets behind. He wants me to catch people. Like those fish, they are trapped and caught up. They are gasping for water to survive.
I have often been like those fish, unable to breathe.
What I need is water – Living Water.
“The one who believes in Me,
as the Scripture has said,
will have streams of Living water flow from deep within him.”
John 7:38 (HCSB)
His water is deep and unending.
Jesus said, “Whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again – ever!
In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water
springing up within him for eternal life.”
John 4:13-14 (HCSB)
He gives freely and abundantly. He satisfies the eternal soul.
I admire those disciples who immediately left their nets behind to follow him. They came just as they were. They did not “tidy up” first. And how do you straighten up a life anyway?
What is your net and where do you cast it? Jesus wants our lives to be about the business of sharing His salvation to a world that is gasping for life. They do not know what they need, but we do. I pray you will leave your nets and fish for men. Give the Living Water that runs through you so that others can have life here and in eternity.
Lord, You give water from the spring of salvation. Thank you for giving it to us when we were thirsty and gasping for life. Help us to drop our nets and follow you so that we will share your living water with those who are without hope. Help us to recognize who they are and give us the wisdom to speak Your eternal life to them so they will never thirst again.
Praying you Live Like You Know,
