Serve With A Cheerful Heart
Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7 (HCSB)
Monday’s intimidate me. The commitments that are made for love of a husband, children, friends, and the church are far too big for one person to handle. The calendar rises up, flexes its penned marks, and glares. I have to remember to breathe …deep.
I sift the requests of others, but when you want to serve God it’s hard to say, “No.” Every opportunity is an opportunity to give Him away. The cheerful list of “want to” becomes a dreaded list of “have to”.
I pray, “I want to do more for You” and when God responds with yes-answers they become weight. What starts as a cheerful, “Yes” becomes a heavy sigh of, “Really?”
All I have asked for, and all I have been blessed with, become the burden and not the blessing.
Jesus says to me, “Be a cheerful giver.”
God is not talking to me about an attitude of cheer toward others, He is talking to me about an attitude of cheer toward Him. My joy response is not an obligation to the people in my life, it is an obligation to the Christ who gives me life and when my heart responds to Him, I cannot help but beam joy on everyone else.
Jesus reminds me I was loved before I could love, and I was given everything before I could give anything.
That a Father would suffer His Son because He loves me, more than He hates my sin, should make a heart overflow with gladness …always.
Jesus gives me opportunities to serve so I can participate with Him in the mystery of salvation. He graciously blesses me with needs so I can be part of His work and when my serving is dedicated to Him, I cannot help but smile because I am smiling at God Himself.
Lord, I pray for those of us that grow weary from commitments made from wanting to serve You. Convict our hearts of Your desire that we be cheerful givers and remind us our joy is not a response to others, it is a response to You. Help us to know that needs are often answers to prayers asking to serve. Give us strength and focus, through the cross, so we can give out of a cheerful heart. Amen.
I pray you Live Like You Know …where you are going.
Strength to strength,
