One Woman at a Time
Now everyone who competes exercises self-control in everything. However, they do it to receive a crown that will fade away, but we a crown that will never fade away.
1 Corinthians 9:25 (HCSB)
In the past, I have run for the materials of this world. I have competed for things that are never enough and never satisfy. I know what it is like to compete for a crown that fades.
And then, then comes Jesus.
I wish I could say that I was a fast learner; quick to turn away from the world and toward my Savior, but I have required long-suffering from God.
In this Scripture, Paul contrasts the Christian race to ancient pagan games. These games started as “funeral games” to honor the dead and then turned into all-out competitions in honor of false gods. And the victor’s prize? A crown made from pine.
And isn’t it fitting that God would show the distinction of such things; a race that honored death and false gods versus the journey that honors life in the one true God? A fading crown that contradicts His crown eternal?
I am no longer running for the things of this world that rust and moth destroy. It is not always easy; when the lies seep and speak of my inadequacies. It’s here that I close my eyes and out loud I say, “Jesus, Jesus” It’s here, that I make the choice to keep pressing forward.
I am keeping my eye on the prize of seeing Him face to face.
God has been training me my whole life for this course set before me.
Exercised me in faith and trust.
Disciplined me through forgiveness of sin.
Fed me on a diet of God’s Word.
Given me stamina in His hope.
Built my perseverance through affliction.
Conditioned my soul by His strength in my weakness.
I have been readied by love.
My friend, what are you running for and where are you racing to? What motivates you to keep on in this messy life? I pray that your course is set toward attaining the crown of life and hearing God’s voice saying, “You’ve run well.”
How has God prepared you for the faith-race?
How can you equip yourself to stay the course?
Oh Jesus, I come before Your throne asking for eyes that are fixed on You and the crown of glory. I lift our journeys and pray that the reality of seeing You face to face will strengthen our souls. Let us mount on wings like eagles. Help us to run and not grow weary, walk and not be faint. Amen.
