There was a festival that took place in Jerusalem by a pool called Bethesda, meaning House of Mercy. During this celebration, God-authority was given to a messenger of the Lord. At a specific time, the messenger would stir up the waters of the pool and the one person who stepped in first, was cured.
You can just imagine the scene – everyone clammering and rushing to be first.
Scripture says there was one who was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
This man has no friend or relative to put him in the pool. It is not that he is being careless or neglectful or because he does not desire it. He says the reason he cannot get there is, “While I am coming, another steps before me.”
His inability to reach the pool is not a lack of will, it is a lack of opportunity. And in that, his heart has become stagnant.
There is no one around him who has the charity to say, “You go first and I will wait.”
But Jesus saw this man and came to his aid without being asked. God knew that in his state of weakness, and length of season, doubt had become his spiritual disability.
Our lives are surrounded by a multitude of impotent women who have become ineffective and inadequate in carrying on the work of grace because there is no one to help her.
Beautiful Sparrow, we need to understand that we all are at the House of Mercy, Healing and restoration. Let’s stop and take notice of the sister who is with us at the pool and let’s NOT run ahead of her needs so that we can be first.
Jesus tells us clearly in Matthew 20:16 that the last shall be first and the first shall be last.
